Happy Janmashtami, it’s Lord Krishna’s Birthday! Janmashtami, a vibrant Hindu festival, commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most beloved deities in Hinduism. This joyous occasion is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion across India.
The Legend of Krishna
Lord Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu, is known for his mischievous nature, divine wisdom, and unwavering devotion to his followers. His birth is said to have taken place in a prison cell in Mathura, under the watchful eye of the evil king Kansa, who sought to kill him. However, Krishna was miraculously saved and raised in the loving care of his foster parents, Nanda and Yashoda.

- Dahi Handi: This playful tradition involves creating a human pyramid to reach a pot of curd hung high above the ground. It is believed to be a symbolic representation of Krishna’s childhood pranks, when he would often steal butter and curd from the gopis.
- Matki Phod: Similar to Dahi Handi, Matki Phod involves breaking a pot filled with curd and other sweets.
- Fasting: Many devotees observe a fast on Janmashtami, breaking it only after midnight when Lord Krishna is believed to have been born.
- Midnight Vigil: The night of Janmashtami is marked by a midnight vigil, during which devotees sing bhajans (devotional songs), recite prayers, and perform rituals.
- Decoration: Homes and temples are beautifully decorated with flowers, lights, and colorful decorations.
- Krishna Leela: Plays and dances depicting the life and adventures of Lord Krishna are performed.
