What are New Social Media Trends for 2024
Social Media is a dynamic media landscape where trends evolve and change over time. Individuals and/or brands pick up on these trends and organize their creatives and media accordingly. I came upon a blog from Hootsuite on emphasizing on what are the new social media trends for 2024. Shall we summarize in short? 🙂
The Rise of Text and Niche Platforms
- Text-only posts are the sleeper hit of the year (and Twitter remains on top): While flashy visuals have dominated social media in recent years, there’s a resurgence of interest in simple text-based posts. Twitter, known for its concise communication style, is likely to benefit from this trend.
- The fediverse is the future of social media (but it’s not here yet): The fediverse is a decentralized network of social media platforms that operate independently but can interact with each other. This offers users more control over their data and privacy. However, the fediverse is still a niche concept and may not go mainstream in 2024.
- Telegram might become the next super app: Telegram is a messaging app that offers features like group chats, channels, and media sharing. It’s seen a surge in popularity in recent years and could become a one-stop shop for communication and content consumption.

Shifting Engagement and Content
- Social platforms will become the hottest new search engines: Social media platforms are no longer just for connecting with friends and family. People are increasingly using them to discover information, research products, and find reviews. This means businesses need to optimize their social media presence for search.
- Longer videos will make a big comeback: While short-form video content like TikTok remains popular, longer videos are regaining traction. Platforms like YouTube are seeing increased engagement with longer-form content that offers more depth and analysis.
- Engagement will move from feeds to DMs: Public interactions on feeds may decrease, with more conversations happening in private messages and group chats. This presents an opportunity for brands to foster deeper connections with their audience through direct messaging.
- Shares will matter more than likes, comments, or followers: The number of followers a brand has is no longer the only measure of success. Brands will be focusing on creating content that gets shared and resonates with audiences, building a more engaged community.
- Every grid post will be a photo dump: Curated feeds with meticulously chosen photos may become a thing of the past. Photo dumps, which involve posting multiple unedited photos in a single post, are becoming a popular way to share a glimpse into someone’s life or an event.
Platform New Social Media Specific Trends
- LinkedIn will deprioritize personal content (and win more love from Gen Z): LinkedIn, traditionally known for professional networking, may reduce the visibility of non-professional content. This could make it a more focused platform for career development and attract a younger demographic like Gen Z.
- TikTok Shop will spark a re-emphasis on authenticity: TikTok Shop, the e-commerce arm of TikTok, is prioritizing authentic content from creators. Consumers are responding more positively to genuine recommendations from people they trust over overly produced and staged content.
New social media trends will arrive month by month, as the platforms change their algorithms and how the users interact with the platform. We just have to wait and witness the viral trends! What is one viral trend you have seen? I have seen multiple! Do tell us at naina1989@gmail.com.
